Corgan Bench

This is a bespoke project for the architecture firm Corgan at their office in Houston, Texas. The project was developed in partnership and under the guidance of MakStudio. Following the guidelines of both firms, I was responsible for the development of the script, the 3D model of the bench, its production files, and assembly instructions. Everything was developed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.

In Corgan’s words; “A sculptural wooden bench that flows from the lobby toward the conference rooms is the centerpiece of the communal area. Functionally, it provides a space to gather and forms a soft boundary transition between the gathering spaces and working spaces. Inspired by the flowing waterways and bayous central to Houston’s landscape and commercial history, the Gallery bench undulates in three dimensions, flowing from the community spaces through the “innovation zone” of meeting spaces, and terminating in a space for personal connection and conversation. The Houston Interiors design team collaborated with Corgan’s model shop and computational design specialists across the firm to study the feature in digital and physical forms, bringing the concept to reality. The result is a warm, supple statement piece that anchors the entry and provides a contrast to the crisp, modern lines of the context.”

It took three months to design and develop the script, and another three months for the bench to be fabricated and installed. With over 34 meters in length and 2,179 pieces, the bench alternates between seating areas and countertop spaces. Each piece was numbered individually, grouped into modules, and custom-installed on site.

Using traditional design methods, this project would have been unfeasible in terms of time and cost. However, through computational design, it was possible to quickly create and modify the complex shapes of the bench, while accommodating all circumstances related to its fabrication and installation, as well as client requirements.

Esse projeto foi executado sob demanda para o estúdio de arquitetura Corgan, na sua unidade de Houston, Texas, EUA. O projeto foi desenvolvido em parceria e sob orientação da MakStudio. Seguindo as diretrizes de ambos os escritórios, fui responsável pelo desenvolvimento do script, o modelo 3D do banco, seus arquivos de produção e instruções de montagem. Tudo desenvolvido utilizando o Rhinoceros e Grasshopper.

Nas palavras de Corgan o “banco escultural de madeira flui do lobby em direção às salas de conferência é o ponto central da área comum. Funcionalmente, ele oferece um espaço para reunir pessoas e forma uma transição suave entre os espaços de encontro e os espaços de trabalho. Inspirada pelos cursos d’água e bayous que são centrais à paisagem e à história comercial de Houston, o banco ondula em três dimensões, fluindo dos espaços comunitários pela “zona de inovação” das salas de reunião e terminando em um espaço para conexão pessoal e conversas. A equipe de design de interiores de Houston colaborou com a oficina de modelos da Corgan e especialistas em design computacional de toda a empresa para estudar o elemento em formas digitais e físicas, trazendo o conceito à realidade. O resultado é uma peça de destaque quente e flexível que ancora a entrada e oferece um contraste com as linhas nítidas e modernas do contexto.”

Foram 3 meses  de trabalho projetando e desenvolvendo seu script, e mais outros 3 meses para ser fabricado e instalado. Com mais de 34 metros de comprimento e 2179 peças, o banco se alterna entre áreas para sentar e áreas de bancada. Peças que por sua vez foram numeradas uma a uma, agrupadas em módulos, e instaladas sob medida no local.

Por meio de métodos tradicionais de desenho, este projeto teria sido inviável por tempo e custo, mas através do design computacional, foi possível criar e alterar com agilidade as formas complexas do banco, ao mesmo tempo que se adequava a todas as circunstâncias da sua fabricação e instalação, bem como os requisitos dos clientes.
